Taft is een woestijnstadje in Californië, dat letterlijk en figuurlijk in de schaduw ligt van Bakersfield. Een keer per jaar wordt er een honkbalwedstrijd tussen scholen georganiseerd, waarbij Taft altijd aan het kortste eind trekt. Behalve die ene keer in 1972. Maar toen liet Jack Dundee de bal, na een beslissende pass van de uitstekende quarterback Reno Hightower, uit de handen glippen. De unieke kans voor Taft om te winnen ging toen verloren. Jack voelt zich voor de rest van zijn dagen schuldig en blijft maar zeuren over zijn mislukking. Nu, dertien jaar later, is iemand op het idee gekomen om die wedstrijd van 1972 nog eens over te doen. Jack is enthousiast en begint te trainen. Reno, de voormalige sportster, moet een ploeg samenstellen.
